Pirates!

Who doesn’t love Pirates!

Students will perk up just hearing the word!  nT has great sites that will build on that excitement, engage the learner, and slip in some learning on the side!

Overarching question:  Pirates:  figures of freedom and adventure or loathsome thugs and murderers of the high seas?  Write a persuasive story using examples of good and bad pirates.

In Middle,

  1.  Start by entering “pirates” into the Keyword box.  We have excellent results. Point out a few sites like:  Pirates of the Whydah:  Real Pirates, Real Life and National Geographic:  Pirates
  2. Refine on Interactive Media.
    1. The second one down, (if BrainPOP is included )Pirates or Privateers:  Boarding on the St. Lawrence – fun interactive site with spooky music.  Choose English on the page to start it off.  Good guys or bad?  You decide…
    2. The third one down – Treasure of the Unlucky Pirate – great story with audio, then point out the Create Your Own box at the top of the site.  Goes to a page where students can create their own stories about pirates .  Could possibly use this feature to write their persuasive story.
    3. (If you want to incorporate the writing aspect:   Enter “persuasive essay “ into the keyword box and find good examples of persuasive essay per grade level.)
    4. For a great lesson plan, go back to your Pirates search, refine on Lesson Plans
      1. Cross-curricular Art Connections:  No Strings Attached:  Pirate Wanted Poster
      2. Archaeology:  Pirate Archaeology Lesson Plan
      3.  For total fun:  Reset  your Pirates search, refine on Learning Games, choose National Geographic:  Blackbeard, Terror at Sea.  Impressive site!
