Virginia Trekkers

A great way to learn about a state is to listen to the travels of residents, and podcasts are a popular method to pass along some of those stories of travel!

Searching for information about Virginia and using the Multimedia Refinement Menu with the Podcast selection can lead you to fantastic resources. For example, check out today’s Site of the Day, featuring the the Virginia Trekkers!  Travel with this group of hardy teachers as they trek around the beautiful State of Virginia. Virtually visit areas of geological and historical significance across the five regions: Appalachian Plateau, Valley and Ridge, Blue Ridge Mountains, Piedmont Region, and the Coastal Plain Region. Rely on the Trekkers to point out interesting features and facts in their signature enthusiastic way! Information is predicated on Virginia State Standards. Activities and games accompany these podcasts.

Get a life cycle!  Check out life cycle information for all kinds of animals – it’s easy to find using a subject and keyword combined approach.  Keyword:  life cycle AND using the Subject Refinement Menu to drill down in the subject of Science on a path such as this one:
Science > Biology > Animals > Animal Classification > Chordates > Fish > Bony

Today’s Site of the Day, a great site about the life cycle of Pacific salmon, can be found using the combined keyword and drill down approach.  Learn all about Pacific salmon from Sammy Salmon and his friends. Come along with Starfish as he follows Sammy the Salmon’s life cycle. Authors provide links to other fun sites such as a salmon story, games, information about Sammy and much more!

Check out another fantastic collection in netTrekker while helping your students become better readers and writers!  The BrainPOP Jr. collection (available under the Collections Refinement Menu) uses interactive movies, games, quizzes, and activities to explore topics.

In today’s Site of the Day, you’ll learn how to make inferences. Find out how to infer what you know or see to come up with an idea. You’ll explore ways to observe and find clues that can help you figure out a writer’s message in a book, essay, or paragraph. You’ll also learn how you can take notes and analyze details to help you infer as you read. Explore how you can become an active reader!
