Maths Is Fun: Algebra

Mannahatta Project
Yesterday’s Site of the Day was about the Manhattan Project, which created the first atomic bomb. Today’s Site of the Day, the Mannahatta Project, is an effort to show what the ecology of Manhattan was once like and how it has changed from forests full of animal habitats to a habitat mainly for people. There is an interactive map to view changes in specific locations and plenty of links to learn about the science behind the project. There are also lesson plans that may be adapted for those outside of New York.

Genie in a Bottle Unleashed
Today’s Site of the Day gives a great example of students showing what they can do with technology! Two 13 year-old students created an award winning film on the Manhattan Project and the decision to drop an atomic bomb on Japan. In this film they are able to interview Nobel Prize winners, the mayor of Hiroshima, and other important people. The video gives students a good understanding of this difficult topic, and shows them how a simple summer film project can turn into much more! When presented at the UN, the film got a standing ovation and an encore showing.

A Healthy Lunchbox Game
Other than picking out a fun design on the outside of their lunchbox, what do students know about healthy lunches?
Today’s Site of the Day challenges students to find foods that make a healthy and balanced lunch. After choosing one of the fun lunchbox designs, players build a healthy sandwich from the choices provided, choose two sides, and finish up with a drink. After students complete their lunch, feedback will be provided about their lunchtime choices.

“English Fairy Tales” by Joseph Jacobs
Today’s Site of the Day features an illustrated collection of full-text fairy tales, including Jack and the Beanstalk, Henny-Penny, The Three Little Pigs, and The Three Bears.
