Associated Press: Astronauts Reflect on the Meaning of Earth Day

Pay tribute to the Earth on Earth Day, April 22. This video from Associated Press presents stunning views of the earth from space, and narration from many astronauts who have been privileged to view it from outer space. Hear from John Glenn, Wally Schirra, two of the earliest American astronauts, as well as those who have flown on the space shuttles, and lived in the space station. The video, 3 minutes and 33 seconds long, shows images from the Gemini missions, Apollo missions, and the space shuttle. It puts into perspective the relative size of the earth in relation to the vast infinity of space, and reemphasizes our need to be good stewards of our planet.earth dayhttp://hosted.ap.org/specials/interactives/wdc/earthday_astronauts/

American Experience: Earth Days

The forty-second anniversary of Earth Day will be on Sunday, April 22. Prepare for the day that becomes more important every year by watching this hour-long movie from PBS’ American Experience. Filled with looks back in history before the first Earth Day and what led up to its establishment, there are interviews with scientists, historians, sociologists, and everyday people. The reason you might want to begin the celebration a little early is because of the many activities included in the teacher’s guide that accompanies the movie. Five lessons that cover between two and four class periods, for students from 5th through 12th grade, look at this movie and the pressing topic of protecting the earth from the standpoint of Civics, History, Visual Arts, Science, Technology, and Language Arts.earth dayhttp://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/films/earthdays/
