Think Green: Earth Day Project Ideas: Grades 3-5

April 22 has been celebrated as Earth Day since 1970. Although we should be practicing the recycling and energy saving suggestions outlined here every day, it is good to have a day to remind us and focus on how we can be responsible citizens. The activities suggested cover the curriculum from language arts to science to art. Write a story about a recycled product, plant some seeds in a recycled plastic bottle, make a mobile featuring endangered animals, and draw signs to help your family remember how to use less water and energy. Associated Press: Astronauts Reflect on the Meaning of Earth Day

Pay tribute to the Earth on Earth Day, April 22. This video from Associated Press presents stunning views of the earth from space, and narration from many astronauts who have been privileged to view it from outer space. Hear from John Glenn, Wally Schirra, two of the earliest American astronauts, as well as those who have flown on the space shuttles, and lived in the space station. The video, 3 minutes and 33 seconds long, shows images from the Gemini missions, Apollo missions, and the space shuttle. It puts into perspective the relative size of the earth in relation to the vast infinity of space, and reemphasizes our need to be good stewards of our planet.earth dayhttp://hosted.ap.org/specials/interactives/wdc/earthday_astronauts/
