Genie in a Bottle Unleashed

Written by: Christina LoPiccolo
Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

Today’s Site of the Day gives a great example of students showing what they can do with technology! Two 13 year-old students created an award winning film on the Manhattan Project and the decision to drop an atomic bomb on Japan. In this film they are able to interview Nobel Prize winners, the mayor of Hiroshima, and other important people. The video gives students a good understanding of this difficult topic, and shows them how a simple summer film project can turn into much more! When presented at the UN, the film got a standing ovation and an encore showing.

Republic Day in India, celebrating the day in 1950 on which the Constitution of India went into effect, completed the separation of India from Great Britain’s control. Today’s celebration can be augmented by hearing first-hand accounts of the journey toward independent statehood in this collection of video interviews with veteran Indian independence soldiers.  Reminisce with these hero’s about the independence movement under Mahatma Gandhi and the nature of non-violent opposition.

Make-a-Flake, Make-a-Snowman & Looking into Holidays Past

Written by: Christina LoPiccolo
Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

Happy Holidays from netTrekker! In honor of the holiday season, we will be featuring several Sites of the Day.

Elementary users can explore two virtual worlds called Make-a-Flake and Make-a-Snowman. Make-a-Flake teaches real-world scissoring skills by letting players create snowflakes from folded sheets of paper. Those who don’t feel like virtual snipping can print out a fabulous flake from a gallery of countless designs and start making snowflakes in real life! Make-a-Snowman allows users to build a snowman and read an animated story about ten little snowmen.  Other links in this site provide emergent reading skills.

Middle and High users are welcome to explore Holidays Past by The Library of Congress. This site allows users to investigate a virtual house for each season and features holidays to celebrate during that  season.  Click  on a window to learn about the past through primary sources such as documents, audio clips, movies and images.  This is a very cool way to look at how our holidays have been celebrated throughout history and a reminder of the power of using primary source materials in the classroom!

National Park Service: Two American Entrepreneurs: Madam CJ Walker & JC Penny

Written by: Christina LoPiccolo
Monday, November 23rd, 2009

Today’s Site of the Day gives two powerful examples of what the American dream really means – working hard to get ahead.

Students are able to use excellent primary reading sources, lesson plan ideas, pictures, and critical thinking questions to complete an investigation into the struggles faced by business entrepreneurs.  By focusing on an African American female entrepreneur and a European American male entrepreneur, this lesson sets up a valuable contrast regarding how gender and race affected peoples’ possibilities to succeed.

Dress Canada’s History!

Written by: Christina LoPiccolo
Thursday, October 15th, 2009

This entertaining Site of the Day first invites the student to choose an era between 1000 and 1900. A character is presented that must be dressed in the appropriate clothing – it is fun to mix and match the clothing and come up with some very funny combinations!

When the correct clothing has been chosen, historical information is given about Canada during that period. The animation and victory sound you get when you choose the correct outfit is especially enjoyable. Be sure to check out the Inuit and Caribou – (why is the Caribou smiling?)

The History Teacher: A Lasting Impressionism

Written by: Christina LoPiccolo
Monday, September 21st, 2009

Hooray for History!

Check out this National History Day Competition Winner from a Christian School in Ada, Michigan about the history of Impressionism–today’s netTrekker Site of the Day.

Inspiring illustrations  include a series from Monet of Haystacks in different seasons.  The author also nicely points out some of the nuances and aesthetics specific to the Impressionist era in contract to other art traditions.
