Scholastic: You Innovate 21

National Park Service: Roadside Attractions
Do you consider giant statues of Paul Bunyan and buildings shaped like milk bottles monuments to the American culture? I Want to Fly!
Drill down into Science topics like Physics and you would think that the resources might get a little “dull”. Not so! Check out Science > Physics > Principles of Motion > Force. Inside this area is a wonderful example of how students can be engaged by some of these complicated STEM topics. Check it out in today’s Site of the Day - I Want to Fly!
This cartoon based interactive site uses a character named Toby to introduce many physics concepts including the principles of motion and force. Toby the wizard wants to fly! Learn how three items can help him accomplish this goal. Real world information and video can be found on this site, helping to further explain the properties of flight.

Academy of Achievement
Students learn and achieve in many different ways, as you know. Now you can help your students see the value in their own approach. Using biographies of great role models to show examples of different styles and approaches to achievement is easy with netTrekker!
Two approaches will help you with this initiative, depending on your own style. First, check out the Teacher Tools area. Teacher Tools is full of great learning styles and strategies, and will help you address that old but new again area of character education:

Next, use the keyword of “Achievement” with a refinement of Biographies (under the Learning Aides Menu) to get sites about great leaders and how they have achieved. You can even search the list based on some of your own qualities to find people to whom you might look as mentors or role models!

MasAlto: Escritores/Writers
Engage your ELL/ESL group by finding sites in their language quickly! Use any keyword in any grade level, then personalize those search results to your non-English speaking population by applying the Language Refinement Menu. Many times there are multiple language choices you can make, depending on the keyword and availability of those topics in different languages.
For example, keyword search “writers” and refine by Spanish to locate this user-friendly Site of the Day written in Spanish and geared toward younger internet users. The site features information about many famous authors from throughout the world. For each writer, students will find a picture and short biography.

Get a life cycle! Check out life cycle information for all kinds of animals – it’s easy to find using a subject and keyword combined approach. Keyword: life cycle AND using the Subject Refinement Menu to drill down in the subject of Science on a path such as this one:
Science > Biology > Animals > Animal Classification > Chordates > Fish > Bony
Today’s Site of the Day, a great site about the life cycle of Pacific salmon, can be found using the combined keyword and drill down approach. The availability of full-text Literature in netTrekker is great, but when you add Audio as a refinement, you really find some powerful resources! Check out this great example in today’s Site of the Day, a collection of copyright-free literature ranging from nursery rhymes to philosophy and literature from many time periods and cultures. There are more than 6,000 texts, and over 1,100 of them are accompanied by audio readings. The site was originally designed to help English language learners, as users can hear and see the texts. It is also useful for those who are hearing-impaired, as well as anyone who is looking for simple access to these texts.

Welcome to Women’s History Month! Welcome to a world where women rule!
Use powerful advanced searching techniques to search for resources within a topic like “Women.” Try “women” as your keyword, then use the Subject Refinement Menu to narrow the resources in the area of Social Studies and Politics. OR, check out the Search in Context feature! Use the drill-down approach to get to the Politics area under Social Studies, then use “women” as your keyword and select the Search in Context box. The International Museum of Women (a museum dedicated to women) offers an online museum exhibition organized around nine themes related to women, power and politics.
